I have never been on a "cyber" social community before and would be greatfull for any info, although i'm not sure i'd be able to help others !!

Seeing as you say this is your first time being part of a community I'm going to assume you may not know what a PM is, a PM is a personal message, sort of like emails you can send other members that are internal to the forum. You have an inbox where all your PMs go. If you get a PM typically you will get a popup window notifying you. You can check out the PM stuff by going up to the top right hand side of the forum, click on the spot that shows your member name, the drop down menu will have a few choices, one of which is "messenger".
Archiving your PMs isn't really necessary unless you have some you wish to save for whatever reason. Your PM inbox is limited to how many PMs it will hold, once it is full you must delete something before you can receive any more messages. So occasionally I like to archive some of my messages, sort of like backing them up. On the old forum the archive feature allowed me to send an email to myself containing all the messages I chose to archive.
For some reason I like to hold on to things like PMs or emails, not all of them, just some. As I was writing this I went and looked at my email account and noticed I had a few emails from 2001. LOL I could probably get rid of them, but I've had 'em this long I might as well keep 'em.
I have no idea if that answers your question. LOL Any questions let me know.

Archiving feature was removed and seems to be only available as a modification. I'll have a look around and see if I can find a modification I trust.

So far found one to archive individual PM's, still hunting for bunches.
Yeah, space was expanded for PM's on this one.
Pat Jake? LOL, I can try, he's become a real cranky old man lately!!!
Shall keep hunting........
