No experience but a quick search reveals that is recommended as a migraine preventative and this listing of potential side-effects:

Most Frequent:
Amnesia, Ataxia, Concentration Difficulty, Diarrhea, Diplopia, Dizziness, Drowsy, Dysarthria, Dysmenorrhea, Fatigue, General Weakness, Impaired Cognition, Insomnia, Irregular Menstrual Periods, Mastalgia, Nausea, Nervousness, Nystagmus, Paresthesia, Tremors, Visual Changes

I doubt very much that any are permanent, but you should discuss them with your dr and/or pharmacist. Make sure you also discuss any prescription, non-prescription, or herbal may you might be taking.

I do have experience taking anti-convulsives (which topomax is) for headaches. In my case it was divalproex (Depakote) and it really helped.

My experience with severe headaches is that it's worth trying anything.
